Vale - Syd Payne

Syd Payne, Latrobe Valley Water Ski Club’s long serving past President sadly passed away on 20 February 2025 aged 85 years.
Syd served as Club President for 29 years retiring in 2003. Syd was also a Life Member of the Club. He was one of the founding members of the Latrobe Valley Water Ski Club and was instrumental in establishing the great facilities that our members still enjoy today.
His vision for the future came to fruition with the construction of the Clubhouse, the Breakwater creating two separate lakes, docks and judging towers which are all part of Syd’s legacy.
He was a very accomplished water skier, especially in tricks and was part of the Club’s Show Skiing Troupe back in the day.
Syd worked tirelessly off the water and achieved so much for the Club, negotiating long term agreements with Council and Authorities, plus organising so many big tournaments which included the Australian Nationals on two separate occasions.
Syd’s knowledge of every facet of water skiing and the rules was second to none.
During his retirement years Syd wrote a Book “As I remember it” The History of The Latrobe Valley Water Ski Club. At the book launch all the past members came back to the Club for the celebration and BBQ. It was a great day for Syd.
Syd will be forever remembered as an Icon and legend of the Latrobe Valley Water Ski Club.
The Club extends our sincere condolences to Syd’s Wife Christine and all the Payne family.
